If you're looking for something to do while visiting Detroit, here's a short list of bars and restaurants just a few minutes away from Ford Field and Comerica Park.
Planning a visit to Detroit for a sporting event at Ford Field or Comerica Park? Between the Detroit Tigers playing at Comerica Park all summer long, the Detroit Lions playing across the street at Ford Field this fall, and the NCAA's Final Four coming to Ford Field in April 2009, there's always plenty going on in Detroit's Sports & Entertainment District. For pre- and post-game celebrating, here are some neighboring bars you may want to check out. All serve alcohol until 2 a.m.
400 Monroe St.
Located in Greektown, Fishbone's serves up great seafood, steak and sushi and features loud, live entertainment. From Ford Field, don't bother with the People Mover because you've got to ride the entire loop to get there. It's easier and faster to walk the few blocks up Brush Street. Staying in the suburbs? Look for locations in Southfield and St. Clair Shores. Call 313-963-3357.
450 W. Fort St.
The Anchor Bar is the nostalgic sports-lovers dream, with decades-old photos of Tigers, Red Wings, Lions and Pistons greats of the past. The food is standard bar fare, but they make a great burger. To get there, take the People Mover to the Fort St./Cass stop and walk two blocks west. Call 313-964-9127.
1529 Broadway St.
Located across from the Detroit Opera House, the DBC is a stone's throw from the baseball and football stadiums. The two-level restaurant delivers a great menu of both food and beers, including a number of home-brewed concoctions. Occupying the lower levels of the Hartz Building, the architecture alone is worth a quick stop. Call 313-962-1529.
237 Joseph Campau Rd.
Serving up home brews from a reconditioned, turn-of-the-century factory in Detroit's Rivertown District, the Atwater has won awards for its fine assortment of beers. Located near the Detroit River, the Atwater is probably longer than you'd prefer to walk from the stadiums, but is only a short cab ride down Jefferson. Call 313-877-9205.
400 Renaissance Center
If an upscale evening is in your plans, check out one of Detroit's premier jazz clubs / restaurants. Located in the Renaissance Center, the People Mover will take you right there. Call 313-567-7301.
2301 Woodward Ave.
Often voted the top sports bar in Detroit, Hockeytown is a must-see for hockey fans. Tigers and Wings memorabilia decorates all walls of this three-story restaurant/bar. Flat-screen TVs make it a game-watching paradise. It's located across the street from the stadiums. Call 313-471-3464.
47 E. Adams St.
Just a block away from Comerica Park and Ford Field, Cheli's is owned by NHL great Chris Chelios. As you'd expect, hockey décor dominates the theme. If you're staying in the suburbs, look for Cheli's other location in downtown Dearborn. Call 313-961-1700.
2115 Woodwrd Ave.
Across the street from Comerica Park, the State Bar is located in the newly renamed Fillmore Theater (formerly the State Theater). Detroit's history is pictured throughout in this otherwise updated and comfortable restaurant/bar. Call 313-962-3663.
For the person looking to gamble, we group together Greektown Casino, MGM Detroit Casino and Hotel, and MotorCity Casino and Hotel. Plus, across the water there's the Caesar's Windsor (though you'll need a passport to get there.) Only Greektown is located within walking distance of the stadiums. MGM is on the western edge of downtown, and MotorCity is across the freeway from there. For more details on each of Detroit's three casinos, click here.
