Once again West Michigan is gearing up for one of their most popular music festivals, Muskegon's Summer Celebration. This year the celebration or Big Party (as it is referred to) will host a variety of musical acts along with fun competitions, a grand arts and crafts show and a safari petting zoo.

Musical Events at Muskegon's Summer Celebration

Entertainment gracing the main stage will include John Legend, Barenaked Ladies, Kellie Pickler, War and Counting Crows. At other venues throughout the festival one can also enjoy both regional and local talent including many singers and bands.

The Arts and Crafts Show at Muskegon's Summer Celebration

Over the years the Artisans Exhibit (sponsored by Meijer) at the Muskegon's Summer Celebration has grown tremendously. Initially the show was held in Hackley Park (on about 2.3 acres of land), but over the last couple of years the show has expanded covering much of Western Avenue, Clay and Fourth streets. A variety of artisans share and sell their wares at this show. The show includes fine artists, photographers, knitters/crocheters, jewelry designers, sculptors and much more. Dates for this exhibit vary from that of the festival. This year's arts and crafts show will begin on Friday, July 3 and continue through Sunday, July 5.

More Fun at Muskegon's Big Party

Although music is the center of Muskegon's Summer Celebration, attendees can enjoy various other activities. One can participate in or observe the sand sculpture competition, barbecue cook-off or a community picnic. In the main fairway of the festival (near the lake) one can enjoy carnival rides including thrill rides, a ferris wheel, carousel and kiddie rides. Attendees can also test their skills at a variety of carnival games. There is also an opening parade and fireworks on both the 4th of July and the closing of the festival.

Costs for Muskegon's Summer Celebration

  • 11-Day Pass $99 for adults and $49 for children (includes admission to all mainstage events and other selected concerts).
  • Individual concert tickets range from $30-$55 (depending upon seating section) and $16 general admission for children.
  • $5 admission to the carnival (this is simply an admission charge, rides, games, etc. are an extra cost.

Headline concerts are held on the main stage which is outdoors near the Muskegon Lake. Because the concerts are in the evening, it's important to carry a jacket and possibly a throw/blanket for additional warmth. Lines for the concerts begin forming as early as 2-3 hours prior to the concert, and since no seating is available at the concert, one must bring their own blanket or stadium/lawn chair.

Muskegon has made a number of changes to its downtown area, nonetheless it is still lacking in lodging. If looking to stay in the downtown area, one can choose from either the Holiday Inn or the independently owned Shoreline Inn. However in the surrounding area/suburbs there is a Comfort Inn (on Sherman Boulevard), a Fairfield Inn (close to the Lakes Mall) and a . The larger Michigan city of Grand Rapids is about 45 minutes away.
