North Peak Brewing Company in offers a respite from the wind and the sand of Traverse City, MI. Hearty food and freshly-brewed beer make North Peak a must-visit.
In a city know for its Cherry Festival, a great many of the city's food options center around this local crop of the Traverse City, MI area. North Peak centers its dishes around hearty food to fill hungry stomachs after a day at the beach or on the water. As its name would suggest North Peak Brewing Company offers a variety of beer brewed on site and uses its brew in some of the most popular dishes on the menu that draws both visitors to Traverse City as well as Cherry City natives.
The most striking item on the menu featuring the brewery's North Peak Golden Ale is the North Peak White Cheddar Ale Soup. This soup is a house specialty created by chef Joshua Deters. Thick and creamy the soup is filled with a wide variety of vegetables that hide in the background, while the ale and the cheddar flavors take center stage. Each bowl comes topped with an unusual garnish that makes the soup beyond a typical cheese and vegetable soup-- honey mustard pretzel pieces. (A large bowl is $4.95 and is enough to share.)
Another popular dish that takes a classic food item and makes it something out of the ordinary is the delicious Triple Meat Pie. Unlike a common pizza, this delicious creation is topped with pepperjack cheese in addition to the classic mozzarella. The meat choices are also above the typical fare. Pepperoni, bacon and sliced hanger steak top the pizza. This unusual combination creates a filling dish that is a perfect end to a day on the water. The steak is sometimes in large pieces, so eating with a knife and fork is recommended. (A pizza costs $7.95 and is more than enough for one person.)
Patrons of North Peak Brewing Company have two options for seating. One popular choice is the outdoor, partially cover patio. Music is often piped in and waiters are equipped to readily assist patrons who choose to sit outside even though the patio is separated from the building by a portion of the parking lot. A year-round choice is the inside seating of the restaurant. While waiting for a table visitors can get a closer look at the brewing process and can also learn more about the building the reataurant occupies-- formerly the Big Delight Candy Factory. The building has some of the original imposing beams as well as much of the old brick work. Another interesting facet is the open wood-burning oven that can be seen from the dining room.
